2019 Toyota Supra The Elegant Sport Car
The story of how the new Supra came about is similar to the story of how Toyota and Subaru teamed up to create the 86 and BRZ. During the summer of 2016, Toyota and BMW announced that they would be working together on a successor to the BMW Z4 and an all-new Toyota Supra. Toyota’s CEO, Akio Toyoda, has stated that one of Toyota’s goals is to add emotion back into their vehicle lineup. To help Toyota reach that goal, they need to add a true Japanese sports car to their lineup.
Some may say that the Toyota 86, Toyota’s sports car, already shows the emotion that Mr. Toyoda wants to create. However, enthusiasts have been pining for the Supra ever since it was announced. Let’s take a look at what the new Supra will be offering.
Toyota introduced the FT-1 concept car in 2014, with the “FT” standing for “Future Toyota.” The new Supra is expected to look similar to the FT-1 concept, with an aggressive front end and sleek, smooth lines running from aft to fore. The front end also has ducts that are part of the headlight design to allow air to cool the braking systems. Those ducts are repeated near the back end of the doors for the rear brakes. The FT-1 also features a simple LED headlight design.
While none of the performance specs of the new Supra have been confirmed, you can expect to be able to choose between a four-cylinder and six-cylinder engine. As is typical, the four-cylinder will come in the more affordable option, while the new twin-turbo six-cylinder is said to push out over 400 horsepower and at least 300 pound-feet of torque.
While still only a possibility, there have been rumors of a combined (both BMW and Toyota) performance-themed hybrid powertrain. However, it would be safe to assume that both the new Z4 and new Supra will share similar performance chops.
Expect all that power to be pushed through the rear-wheels. Neither BMW nor Toyota have stated what transmission will be available.
